Toyota Needs More Discounts for Its Tundra

toyota tundra
The second world largest automaker and producer of high quality Toyota Land Cruiser parts, Toyota Motor Corp. according to its North American President needs to discount the Tundra truck to reach its goal of doubling its US share for large pickups.

Jim Press of Toyota Motor North America said in an interview with New York Today, “Incentives for us are not strategic, they are tactical. In the dealer-transaction price game, where the competitors really set the stage with their incentive activity, it drives us to the point where we recognize that incentives are part of this market.”

The Japanese automaker last June has began giving discount reaching as much as $3,500 for the 2007 Tundra that is four months after the truck was release for sale. Tundra’s list prices range from $22,290 to $41,850. Edmunds.com has estimated that the average Tundra incentive that Toyota has given last month reaches $5,083 which is more than from what GM and Ford has offered for their large pickups.

The revamped Tundra that was built in San Antonio was made even bigger and more powerful than its predecessor and for the very first time Toyota will be directly competing with Ford’s F-Series and GM’s Chevrolet Silverado trucks. The Tundra US sales have increase by 44 percent to 82,840 in the first half of this year that is despite the fact that the industry-wide total for large pickups fell by 3.1 percent.

According to John Casesa, managing partner of Casesa Strategic Advisors LLC in New York, the size of incentives given for the Tundra is quite unusual for any new Toyota product. He also added, “To some extent they are really struggling with Tundra, and domestic companies are fighting back ferociously.”

Last June, the average Tundra price or the price which customers actually pay including incentives has reached $33,605 according to Edmunds.com. The Santa Monica, California-based company also added that the average price for Ford’s F-150s was $29,657 while for GM’s Silverado 1500s its $29,151.

As usual the increasing gasoline prices was blamed for the slow sales of the trucks but Press assured that consumer demand for pick-ups will not fade for long. He added, “Fuel prices will not substantially change the dynamics and the size of the market, but they will require product attributes that respond more to the environment of higher gas prices or greenhouse-gas concerns or environmental needs.”

Press further added, Toyota is selling “about double the volume of the last- generation Tundra in terms of where we were last year, in a segment that’s down. We’re right on our target. Long term, it’s a segment we really need to be in to continue to grow with our customers as they come into our product line.”

It can also be noted that for the first quarter of this year Toyota has beaten GM in terms of sales volume which simply shows the increasing demand for Toyota products in the world.

Toyota’s Reliability Takes a Hit

toyota tundra
When it comes to car buying, a lot of people consider the different attributes of a vehicle. Others are looking for a new vehicle with good performance while others put more value on comfort. Some buyers are after the exterior design of a vehicle while some are looking for vehicles loaded with features. There are also those whose choice of vehicle depends on its safety. But one thing that all consider is a vehicle’s reliability. And when it comes to reliability issues, Toyota is tops – that is, until this year.

Consumer Reports recently reported that Toyota’s vehicles’ reliability has declined. This comes after years of the Japanese automaker’s leadership in the industry when it comes to reliability. The Consumer Reports 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey shows that consumers are now finding Toyota vehicles less reliable than their ancestors. In contrast, Ford’s vehicles have received good marks from consumers.

The most popular Toyota nameplate, the V6 variant of the Camry received a dismal and surprising below average rating in terms of predicted reliability. The Camry has been redesigned fore 2007 and it has always been Toyota’s best selling vehicle. It has been known through the years as a reliable car. The redesign though may have had negative effects on the reliability of the car.

Aside from the 2007 Camry, the redesigned and beefed-up Toyota Tundra also received a below average rating in reliability. The four-wheel drive V8 version of the full-size pickup truck received the dismal rating. Even Lexus’ all-wheel drive variant of the GS sedan received a below average rating. Since Consumer Reports does not recommend any vehicle with a below average rating, the three variants are no longer on the prestigious “Recommended list” of Consumer Reports.

Although reliability of aforementioned variants dropped below average, the automaker in general is still third in the overall reliability ranking. That includes Toyota’s luxury division Lexus and its youth brand Scion. The Japanese automaker ranked below fellow Japanese automakers. Honda is ranked as the producer of the most reliable automobiles. Subaru, the makers of the durable Subaru ignition coil, spark plugs, and spark plug wires is ranked second.

Toyota Motor Sales Executive Vice President Jim Lentz had this to say in response to the Consumer Reports announcement: “Over all, this survey reflects well on our products. However, we’re taking measures every day to continue to sharpen quality and enhance customer satisfaction.” Being on track to become the largest automaker in the world, Toyota has been stepping up its production output. It is only normal for automakers to have problems with quality control after a huge boost in production. Thus Toyota is expected to bounce back from this minor stumble.

In the past, redesigned Toyota vehicles have been recommended by Consumer Reports due to the automaker’s track record. The Auto Channel reported that even if Consumer Reports have insufficient reliability data for a new vehicle, it still recommends redesigned Toyota, Lexus, and Scion nameplates due to the aforementioned reason. But with the amount of Toyota recalls this year, Consumer Reports gave the redesigned Toyota vehicles below average reliability scores. If Toyota can bounce back to its trademark stance in terms of reliability, Consumer Reports may bring back its policy to recommend the automaker’s newly redesigned vehicles.

Car of the Future Created By Toyota

toyota
Toyota sure does have a lot of surprises up its sleeve. But it would not be quite surprising if it does. After all, we do know that the Toyota Motor Corporation can be considered as one of the biggest and strongest companies in the industry right now. And with great power comes great responsibility and perhaps the company believes that it is their responsibility to produce vehicles that would astound and make the public happy. Sure, they do create remarkable stuff from Toyota Sequoia original parts to fine Toyota accessories to exemplary vehicles but now the company would like to show the motoring public a glimpse of what the future holds.

The company would be showing off soon the Toyota Fine-N vehicle which is actually a hydrogen fuel cell concept car. And according to Toyota, this kind of vehicle would soon be filling the roads and streets of our future. This vehicle would be part of the main displays that Toyota South Africa would be sending off at the Auto Africa 2006 exhibit. The event would be held at Johannesburg’s Expo Center and would be starting from the 26th of October up until the 5th of November.

As per the Toyota Fine-N, you would see that this vehicle has for four doors and it comes with a four wheel drive system for a better driving response. The company also boasts of its design and potential performance for all fuel cell vehicles that would be coming in the future. The wheels of the vehicle have got their very own electric motors and these are powered right from the Toyota fuel cell stack and its lithium ion battery. And its power source could be able to produce some 25 kW and 110 Nm of torque. You would find the fuel cell stack, the lithium ion battery, and the rest of the vehicle’s power control unit all beneath the floor. This is primarily because Toyota believes that by doing such, there would be more floor space for the vehicle’s occupants and passengers. Versatile, the Toyota Fine-N would be a vehicle to look out for.

Toyota Donates Modified Vehicles to Young Veterans

toyota
The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) has already opened its doors and in connection with the opening ceremonies, Toyota showed its concern for the American soldiers who have fought in wars and places of chaos around the world.

At the opening ceremonies of this car show in the Big Apple, two modified Toyota vehicles were presented to two young veterans of the Iraqi war and both of these soldiers have sustained leg injuries. Both soldiers are wounded by IED or improvised explosive devices at some stage in their tour of duty in Iraq. The explosive devices caused leg amputation for the two young soldiers.

U.S. Army veteran Luis Puertas of Long Island City, Queens is one of the two young veterans presented with a modified Toyota vehicle. The 20-year old veteran lost both his legs while on tour of duty in Iraq when an improvised explosive device was detonated under his Humvee while he was stationed in Baghdad. Toyota presented him with a wheelchair-accessible 2007 Toyota Sienna Rampvan. The vehicle is modified to suit Luis’ need for mobility.

First, the vehicle’s floor was lowered by ten inches by the BraunAbility group. The mobility company also integrated a power wheelchair ramp to make the vehicle even more accessible to Luis in his wheelchair. Further, the J. Busani Inc. will also integrate a wheelchair dock to enable Luis to drive the vehicle on his own.

Hand controls will also be installed since the brake and accelerator foot pedals will not be of use to the young veteran. The Toyota Sienna with its modified amenities and stock parts like the Toyota window motors will surely increase Luis’ mobility.

U.S. Marine Ryan Donnelly is the second recipient of a modified Toyota vehicle. The 23 year old veteran from Manhattan received a 2007 Toyota Yaris during the opening ceremonies of the New York Auto Show. Ryan lost his right leg below the knee to an improvised explosive device on his second tour of Iraq. Due to the amputation of his right leg, the J. Busani Inc. modified the Toyota Yaris by transferring its accelerator foot pedals on the left side of the driver.

Ryan, just like Luis, is also fitted with prosthetic legs and with the modified Toyota Yaris, he can also increase his mobility and certainly go places.

The modified Toyota vehicles are part of Toyota’s Mobility Assistance Program. The program, aside from providing modified vehicles, also provides information to their disabled consumers. Their website gives out information where consumers can find rehabilitation specialists, driving instructors for person with disabilities, and other mobility equipment dealers. This program allows disabled motorists to continue driving even after suffering injuries such as that of the two veterans who received the modified Toyota vehicles.

The mobility equipment dealers that Toyota listed on their website not only install specialized equipments but also impart training to consumers on hoe to use the installed equipments.
