How long do the batteries in a Prius last and how much does it cost to replace them?

prius
I am considering buying a Prius. I don’t mind paying the extra cost over a car the same size when buying one. However, even though the gas mileage and cost saving is a great plus, will the eventual cost of replacing the batteries negate the gas saving costs.

10 years 150000 mile warranty from Toyota. In taxi trials the batteries have racked up between 300K and 500K miles without needing a replacement. The battery pack consists of several cells, so in the event that one cell goes bad, you dont replace the whole battery pack. The reason the batteries last so long, is this: batteries don’t like to be fully charged or fully discharged, this shortens their life, if you go between 30% and 70% of battery’s capacity, the last indefinitely, the on board computer in the Prius is calibrated to maximize the battery life.

The hybrid battery in the Prius is covered by a standard 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

In the eight states with California-standard emissions laws, the warranty is automatically extended to 10 years / 150,000 miles. The battery is designed to last beyond that– basically the lifetime of the car.

If the battery fails during the warranty period, the replacement cost is FREE.

If you are going to junk the car at the end of its life, the battery is recyclable– You call the phone number on the battery casing and arrange to turn it in at a Toyota dealership for recycling so you can collect a $200 bounty.

I own an ‘07 Prius and I’m not worried about the battery at all, not with that warranty covering it. (Mine is bought and registered in one of the CARB states so I got 10 years / 150,000 miles coverage).

Consumer Reports rates their reliability as outstanding. With the warranty, do not expect any problems that aren’t covered. Expect to pay less than $25K in today’s market. While gas has gone down, don’t expect it to stay that way.
